In films, pools are generally a setting for elegance and hedonism. In The Swimming Pool, however, it has a kind of humble charm. Esteban, a shy Swimming instructor and former professional swimmer, spends his days submerged, waiting for his four students. They all have in common some sort of disability: Diana’s leg has been amputated and she is possessive; Dany has Down syndrome; Rodrigo has mobility issues; Oscar, despite having no apparent disability, refuses to speak. Little by little, however, conflicts arise and the idyllic tropical setting is filled with animosity. Berlin 2013.
