This undertaking, which is under construction, counts on the financial support of private companies located in the Port Zone and expects to exhibit more than 12 thousand sea animals
The tank will be another draw to Rio de Janeiro: AquaRio, will be the largest sea tank in Latin America. The undertaking will be finished up to 2010, being supported by private companies in partnership with the City Hall, which will concede an area, where the old Cibrazem cold storage plant used to operate, in Port Zone. Works estimate value is around 65 million of Brazilian Reais.
The project expects to exhibit the in tanks 12 thousand of sea animals of 400 species, using a total of 5.4 liters million of water. A tunnel will divide the main tank into two sections: the Oceanic Room, containing many species of sea animals; and the Scuba Diving Room, where people will have the opportunity to dive and swim among sea animals.
AquaRio is expected to generate from 125 to 220 direct jobs. Besides its interaction activities developed with the public, AquaRio will also house a scientific center for developing research concerning sea fauna. For supporting such research and studies, a partnership with the Department of Marine Biology of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) is expected to be confirmed.
AquaRio will provide an underground parking lot, a panoramic restaurant, a shopping mall, and a scuba diving school. This outstanding project is part of the plan to renew and revitalize the Port Zone, and Rio de Janeiro City Hall considers this a primary project.
