Silver medallist Dong Dong of China joined Canada's Karen Cockburn on a record three medals in trampoline gymnastics in Olympic history.

Dong won this event in 2012 and claimed bronze in 2008. Gao Lei clinched bronze for China, which has now won six Olympic medals in men's trampoline, at least twice as many as any other NOC.

Tactics helped shut out China

A jubilant Hancharou pumped his fist in delight after his routine: "I think I knew I did quite well," he said. "I did my usual routine and at the end I felt very good. It was an explosion of feelings."

"Like all other athletes, I felt very nervous. However, we have excellent experts working with us, we have people who support us, our coaches, our family. This is how I perform better than the Chinese athletes and came out first."

Hancharou won the bronze medal at the 2014 world championships and a silver a year later.

"Compared to my 2015 routine, the one I did today is identical. If you compare it to the world championships routine in 2014, today's exercise is even easier. It's all about tactics. We wanted to keep it on the same level of difficulty, so my performance would not deteriorate if I go after height and difficulty."

"When I started I never even dreamed that I would make it to the Belarusian national team level. Over time things have evolved and I have become a professional."
