Rio 2016 to broaden London 2012 social project

By Rio 2016

State of Rio de Janeiro to benefit from the sport development and coach qualification “International Inspiration” program

On Wednesday, February 17, the Organizing Committee for Rio 2016 Games signed an agreement with representatives of the “International Inspiration” program designed by the organizers of London 2012 Games. During the ceremony, in Vancouver, Canada, where the Olympic Winter Games are now being held, it was announced that the British project will be implemented, by Rio 2016 Committee, in Rio de Janeiro and in other cities of the state. The decision to extend the program to Rio de Janeiro was made after a visit of governor Sergio Cabral to London 2012 Organizing Committee. The “International Inspiration” program intends to use sport as a tool for social transformation, and Brazil was one of the five countries selected by the London 2012 team to be included in the pilot-project. The “International Inspiration” program has three key objectives: encourage sport practice among youths; qualify coaches and physical education teachers in the school system to deal with sport talents; and qualify professionals involved in social projects to develop sport initiation actions. “Brazil has a large number of youths and we felt tuned to the “International Inspiration” program since the early stages of Rio’s bid project. London and Rio Olympic projects share the purpose of using sport to change the lives of millions of youths”, the president of Rio 2016 Committee Carlos Arthur Nuzman said. In November 2008, British Minister for 2012 Olympic Games Tessa Jowell officially opened the first Brazilian center of this project, in Recife. On the occasion, Rio 2016 Committee promised to proceed with project development if Rio was elected to host 2016 Olympic Games. The target now is to take the “International Inspiration” program to all Brazilian states and, by the end of Rio 2016 Games, to all South American countries.
