Rio de Janeiro is the host city to begin work most quickly on the organization of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. The fact was praised by the Swiss Olympic Games executive director, Gilbert Felli, at the closure of the Rio 2016 Orientation Seminar organized by the IOC. Only 28 days after the election of Rio de Janeiro to host the 2016 Games, the event marked the official start of the work of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee.

Topics for the Orientation Seminar included the structure, management and development planning of the Games over the next seven years. No specific technical data of Rio de Janeiro’s project was analyzed. The event, held at the Copacabana Palace Hotel, brought together 200 people, including representatives of three levels of government - Federal, State and Municipal – as well as the Rio 2016 Committee, the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Brazilian Paralympic Committee. "I would like to congratulate everyone. Brazil can be proud of what was achieved in Copenhagen. The two days of this seminar have been very important because we know that there is no time to lose over the next seven years. At this meeting we met people who understand perfectly the importance of the Olympics. Rio de Janeiro is the host city that began work on organizing the Games most quickly," Felli said.

In addition to the Olympic Games executive director, the IOC delegation included six other members: Timo Lumme, director of television and marketing services; Christophe Dubi, sports director; Antony Scanlon, head of Games services and coordination of the Olympic Games; Jennifer O’Brien, Olympic Games coordination project manager; Robert Roxburgh, director of media relations, and Toshio Tsurunaga, manager of IOC services for National Olympic Committees. "The objective of this seminar was to build partnerships between the different levels of organization of the Games. We are responsible for a special event, and we have to provide the best for all clients. We explained what kind of support the IOC can give to the Organizing Committee. We are feeling confident, because we believe that everything was very well understood and that Rio 2016 will do an excellent job." added Felli.

For Rio 2016 president, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, the presence of Sports Minister Orlando Silva, state governor, Sergio Cabral and Mayor Eduardo Paes shows the commitment of the three levels of government to the project. "The seminar was very helpful. The day after Rio de Janeiro’s election as host city, we had meetings with the IOC, and then we met with many other sectors, but this event actually marks the beginning of the Committee’s work. In February, during the IOC session we will present the first Rio 2016 progress report." he said.
