Already put in your application for Olympic Games tickets? Now, it’s time to think about which of the world’s best Paralympic athletes you want to see in action.
On Thursday 14 May the Rio 2016 Organising Committee published its price list for tickets for the Paralympic Games. Of the 3.3 million tickets that will be up for grabs, 94 per cent will be on sale for R$70 (US$23) or less.
In keeping with the promise to make the Games accessible to all, the ticket prices are as affordable as possible. The cost of entry to sporting events will range from R$10 to R$130, while prices for the opening and closing ceremonies are between R$100 to R$1200.
Over 3.3 million tickets will be available to the public – more than the 2.8 million sold for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
“Many records will be broken by the athletes competing in Rio 2016, but the first one we’re hoping to shatter is for the number of spectators,” Andrew Parsons, the president of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee, vice-president of the International Paralympic Committee and director of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Integration Committee, said. “Brazilians will have the main role in making sure we beat the record for ticket sales at the Paralympic Games, but we also counting on international fans to reach this fantastic goal.”
Fans can choose between 300 sessions of 23 Paralympic sports, including two new disciplines: canoe and triathlon. Four thousand, three hundred and fifty athletes from over 170 countries will be in action in 20 different locations, across the four zones of the Rio 2016 games. Events will take place over the course of 12 days from 7 to 18 September 2016.
Ticket will go on sale exactly one year before the opening ceremony, on 7 September 2015, International Paralympic Day. In the first phase, tickets will be allocated by lot. The calendar of events for the Paralympic Games will be published in the coming months.
As with the Olympic Games, senior citizens and wheelchair users will have the right to half-price tickets. Students and people with a disability or reduced mobility will have the right to discounted tickets. Fans can also opt to pay in interest-free instalments. (All of these conditions are available only to Brazilians and foreigners with residency in Brazil).
