Sport brings together fundamental values such as respect, friendship and excellence. More than simply promoting sports competitions for athletes from the whole world, the Olympic Movement represents a true philosophy of life.

Olympic Day commemorates the anniversary of the foundation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 23 June and it comes to Rio 2016™ with the idea of celebration and movement. From next week, the organisation hosts a series of sporting and cultural activities to commemorate the date which, in Brazil, also coincides with National Sport Day.

Check out our programme below and celebrate this movement with us every day:

Connected

For those connected to Facebook, Rio 2016™ will promote a cultural contest in order to test our followers’ knowledge about the Olympic Movement. With a questions and answers game that will be online next week, on 17-22 June, participants will compete to win one of 12 exclusive Rio 2016™ kits.

In order to take part, simply like the Rio2016™ page on Facebook and follow the action’s rules, available here.

Still regarding the social network, those who stay tuned for the Rio 2016™ page on Sunday (23) will be able to follow in real time the coverage of the actions that took place during Olympic Day as well as to declare their passion for sport through exclusive images available on the page.

Within reach

The first logo to be thought in three dimensions, the Rio 2016 brand sculpture will be displayed at Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre on 18-20 June. Besides visiting a Rio 2016™ Olympic venue, around 90 children from SESI (Industrial Social Services) social projects will take part in the Olympic Day celebrations organised by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB in Portuguese) which will include cultural activities on the Olympic Movement and workshops in five different sports – Fencing, Hockey, Table Tennis, Archery and Wrestling. Among the guests for the week are the brothers and basketball athletes Marcelinho and Duda Machado.

The Games through children’s eyes

A cultural contest promoted at 11 Rio 2016 partner municipal schools will look for the children’s view of the Olympic Movement. Through drawings, the students will portray their view of the Games and be eligible to win Rio 2016™ prizes.

"It's important to get children to experience the Olympics, the sports experience and values such as respect, friendship and excellence so that in the future, become multipliers of these values in society," said Mariana Behr, who leads the project education Rio 2016™.

Out in the streets

The celebration will continue in the streets after Sunday. The Olympic Day Run organised by the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB in Portuguese) will take place next Tuesday, the 25th, from 9am, in the Urca neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro.

Around 350 children from the city’s pacified communities are expected at the event. Among them, 50 young runners from Luiz Delfino and Brigadeiro Faria Lima municipal schools, which are part of the Rio 2016™ education project, will compete in the 06-10 year-old category. After the run, the children will also take part in a chat with olympic champion Nalbert as well as cultural activities on the Olympic Movement in Brazil and around the world.
