A safe city for residents and the Olympic Family; vigorous and technically-excellent Olympic Games; and a legacy of transformation for the city and country: these are the primary objectives of Rio 2016s security plans, presented today to the IOC Evaluation Commission.
Presenters included National Public Security Secretary Ricardo Balesteri, State Public Security Secretary José Mariano Beltrame, Rio 2016 Security Commission President Régis Limana, Rio 2016 Security Commission Planning Coordinator Carlos Alberto Gomes and Military Police Captain Priscila Oliveira.
The presentation set out Brazils new public security policies, developed by the Federal, State and City governments. The presentation to the Commission members went very well, said Ricardo Balesteri.
In Rio de Janeiro there is seamless integration between the three levels of government with regards to security matters. We described our concept of proximity policing to the Commission members today which includes social projects and interaction with young people in targeted communities rather than relying solely on traditional techniques for fighting crime. We are investing in training a whole new generation of police officers with varied skill sets.
Mariano Beltrame emphasized the success of security operations for the Rio 2007 Pan American and Parapan American Games. We illustrated to the Commission members that we approach safety issues in an objective and transparent manner. Rio de Janeiro has proven experience in hosting major international events safely for athletes and spectators and the 2007 Games proved this once more, he said.
Medical Services, Technology and Media Operations were the other Candidature Themes presented to the IOC today. According to Mayor Eduardo Paes, the Rio 2016 team continued to impress members and showcase their strengths across every Theme. Every Theme was well developed and well presented by our experts. I firmly believe that over the course of the last week, our Bid Committee and broader team have demonstrated dedication, professionalism and the ability to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games, said Paes.
After the last presentation to the IOC Evaluation Commission, Governor Sérgio Cabral was in a visibly upbeat mood: We did well in the presentations today and clearly illustrated to the Commission members the interaction and synergy between all levels of government and the Bid Committee as we aspire to bring the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games to Brazil. I am confident that we have a good chance of being selected to host the Games. Our time has arrived and we are ready for it, concluded Cabral.
