Rio 2016 participates in Earth Hour
The Rio 2016 Olympic Games Organizing Committee Will participate in the “Earth Hour”, which this Saturday the 27th, intends to mobilize 1 million people around the world for an alert against global warming. Between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm, the lighting at the Rio 2016 Committee headquarters, in Barra da Tijuca, will be switched off and the website will have a special version, which will leave the starter page “in the dark”. Rio de Janeiro was chosen as the symbolic city for the second Brazilian edition of the “Earth Hour. The illumination of various monuments and key-spots in the city, such as Christ Redeemer, the beach in Copacabana, Nossa Senhora da Penha Church, The Sugar Loaf Mountain and the Brazilian Jockey Club, will be switched off. This action will stimulate residents to also switch off their lights at home, for one hour. Apart from Rio de Janeiro, 61 other Brazilian cities, including 15 capitals, will participate in the event. “The Brazilians have been showing a growing ecological awareness. The concern with the environment is highly present in Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic project, and for this reason, the Rio 2016 Committee cannot be left out of an initiative like the Earth Hour”, said the Rio 2016 Committee president, Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
