More than 100,000 tickets to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games were sold in the first four-and-a-half hours of ‘Super Thursday’ on 21 July, when  the final large batch of tickets was released onto the market.

The most sought-after sports were football, beach volleyball, basketball, tennis and athletics.

The new batch of 100,000 tickets – including some for previously sold-out sessions – included the opening and closing ceremonies, previously unavailable swimming and tennis sessions, and medal events in volleyball, basketball and football.

How to plan a last-minute trip to the Rio 2016 Games

With venue preparations being completed and broadcast plans finalised, some of the seating areas previously set aside for the use of broadcast equipment have been freed up, making more tickets available.

There are also tickets that were not part of the Super Thursday batch still available for major events, such as the final of the men’s 100m.

Beach volleyball, marathon, football... Rio 2016 tickets available for up to US$15

“We are very pleased with the rush for Olympic tickets experienced today,” said Rio 2016 ticketing director Donovan Ferreti.

“We know that Brazilians are last-minute buyers and it is fantastic to see that the excitement and anticipation for the Games is now reaching its peak.

“There are still tickets available across many sports, including finals, and fans are encouraged to enter the ticket portal as soon as possible to join us on this journey.”
