Fiji win historic gold in rugby sevens

The Fijian men's rugby sevens team won the first Olympic medal in the country's history. It came with an utterly dominant display in the final, a 43-7 rout of Great Britain at Deodoro Stadium. Team captain Osea Kolinisau scored a try and two conversions.

Phelps bags fourth gold of Games, 22nd of career

He seems unstoppable. Having come out of retirement to compete at the Rio 2016 Games, Michael Phelps seems stronger than ever. On Thursday he took his fourth gold medal of the Games, crushing the opposition in the 200m individual medley. He could win more gold on Friday and Saturday.

Ma Long takes gold

World no.1 table tennis star Ma Long defeated his compatriot and London 2012 champion Zhang Jike 4-0 at Riocentro Pavillion 3. China remains on course to sweep the table tennis medals once again. On Wednesday, Ding Ning beat her teammate Li Xioaxia, in women's singles.

Table tennis’s million-dollar question: how do you beat the Chinese?

Nadal marches on

Spain's flag-bearer, Rafael Nadal, is into the quarter-finals of the men's singles tennis tournament. The matches in Rio have been his first tournament in two and a half months. The 14-time major champion beat 15th-seeded Gilles Simon of France 7-6 (5), 6-3. Nadal next faces Italy's Thomaz Bellucci on Friday. In the other men's singles match on centre court, Andy Murray survived a scare coming back from 3-0 down in the third set to beat Italian Fabio Fognini 6-1 2-6 6-3.

Dutch pop-up party

Holland House has become a kind of pilgrimage for sports fans visiting the Olympic Games. At Beijing 2008 and London 2012, this house was jumping with orange coloured joy, every night of the Games. The word in Rio is that it is thumping once again. Essentially, it is a meeting place for everyone who is involved in Dutch sports, but fans from all over the world can join in. It is open for both athletes and fans, a place where you can watch the sport and party, Dutch style - which means lots of sing-alongs. It is at Clube Monte Libano, located on the edge of Ipanema and Leblon. Day one, hole-in-one

Great Britain ace Justin Rose stroked a hole-in-one on the par-three, 189-yard fourth hole of the Olympic Golf Course. Rose said he wasn't immediately certain if it had gone in. "It was either in or it was off the back edge. And the way the reaction was from the few people around the green we figured it had gone in. Although it would have been a great trick to play on me if it had gone 20 yards over the back," he said.

World record in team pursuit cycling

Team GB are once again showing dominance in Olympic track cycling. This time, it is the women's team pursuit quartet of Katie Archibald, Laura Trott, Elinor Barker and Joanna Rowsell-Shand who clocked a time of 4:13.260 in qualifying, to better the world record set last year. Later, Team GB clinched the men's team sprint gold medal.

Maialen Chourraut masters the rapids

The Spaniard took the canoe slalom (K1) gold medal with a time that was more than a full three seconds faster than her closest opponent's. It was Spain's second gold medal of Rio 2016.

Silver lining for Grainger

Rower Kath Grainger is Great Britain's most decorated female Olympian after winning a silver medal in the women's double sculls. Grainger won gold at London 2012 and a silver at Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008. She is the only British woman with five Olympic medals.
