Judo Grand Slam and athletics Brazil Grand Prix gather Olympic medalists in Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro experienced a weekend of a lot of sports in facilities that will stage the 2016 Olympic Games. At the Maracanãzinho stadium, which will host the volleyball competitions, 390 athletes from 42 countries competed the Brazilian stage of the judo Grand Slam. João Havelange stadium, athletics competition venue, hosted the experts of sports on the Brazil Grand Prix.
The Brazilian stage of the judo Grand Slam distributed points for the ranking that will define places for the London 2012 Olympic Games. Among the competitors, there were Olympic medalists such as the Brazilians Flávio Canto (Athens 2004 bronze medal) and Leandro Guilheiro (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 bronze medal); Japanese Misato Nakamura (Beijing 2008 bronze medal); and the Cubans, Yanet Bermoy (Beijing 2008 silver medal), Yalennis Castillo (Beijing 2008 silver medal), Idalis Ortiz (Beijing 2008 bronze medal) and Oscar Braison (Beijing 2008 bronze medal).
In front of eight thousand spectators, the Brazilian team achieved the general third place, with one gold medal, one silver medal and four bronze medals. Japan was first (eight gold, two silvers and three bronzes), followed by Russia (one gold, two silvers and two bronzes). It´s indescribable the sensation I felt when I entered the stadium and heard so many people shouting out my name. The supporters are the extra strength we need to win a medal, said Brazilian Hugo Pessanha, 90 kg category Champion.
With the participation of 149 athletes from 34 countries, the athletics Brazil Grand Prix took seven thousand people to the João Havelange stadium. Silver medal in Beijing 2008, English Phillips Idowu, was first on the triple jump. It was very good to compete in Rio de Janeiro, Said Idowu. Richard Thompson, from Trinidad and Tobago, who achieved two silver medals in Beijing 2008, also took part in the Brazil Grand Prix.
The Brazilians achieved seven medals (four gold and three bronze). The highlight was Fabiana Murer, who was in the Beijing 2008 Games. She won the pole vaulter competition with the year best world score: 4,75m.
