The historical selection of Rio de Janeiro to host 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games was the theme of the 11th edition of the Olympic Brazil Award ceremony. For is commitment with Rios bid, president Lula received the Olympic Personality Award 2009. I though I had already experienced all the emotions a human being is capable of feeling. But nothing compares to what I have actually felt in Copenhagen. We were awarded the Olympic Games because we worked in unison and professionally, Lula said, drawing a big round of applause from the audience.
President Carlos Arthur Nuzman offered special thanks to the representatives of the three levels of government, to volunteers, the press and Rio 2016 Bid Committee and to all those who supported Rios Olympic project. The final thank you was directed to the athletes. These are the heroes who write the most brilliant pages and drive Brazilian sport higher and higher, Nuzman said.
The Olympic Brazil Award paid tribute to the stars of 42 sport disciplines. Swimmer César Cielo and judoka Sarah Menezes were elected 2009 top athletes. To Minister Orlando Silva, the organization of the Olympic Games Rio 2016 will follow the example set by each one of the awarded athletes. Athletes follow strict programs and every day new targets must be met. This is how we intend to proceed, and I am absolutely sure we will deliver an unforgettable event in 2016, Orlando stated.
