The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission for the Rio 2016 Games started its sixth meeting in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. The commission, known as CoCom, closely monitors the overall Games project and provides advice and support from its panel of experts. The team is led by chairwoman Nawal El Moutawakel, who is an IOC Vice President and former Olympic champion in the women’s 400m hurdles.
The commission’s visit will run from Wednesday until Friday, during which time the various departments of the Rio 2016 Organising Committee will present their progress at the organisation’s headquarters in central Rio. The commission, which visits Rio every six months, also receives updates from the public authorities who play a crucial part in the organisation and staging of the Games. Infrastructure, sport and competitions, commercial and sustainability are among the many areas which are reported on.
The CoCom members will also visit the competition sites across the city to see how the venues are taking shape. At the end of the meeting the commission produces a report which contains all the agreed actions that must be completed by the next CoCoom visit, scheduled for September.
Real-time coverage of the 6th CoCom meeting in Rio can be followed on our Twitter account.
