The challenges and operations involved in organizing the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games were discussed today, the first day of the Orientation Seminar organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The event, taking place at the Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio de Janeiro, has brought together representatives of the three levels of government – federal, state and city – the Rio 2016 Committee, the Brazilian Olympic Committee and the Brazilian Paralympic Committee.

A video showing images of Rio de Janeiro and the announcement of the host city for the 2016 Games kicked off the event. Gilbert Felli, the IOC’s director of the Olympic Games, explained the purpose of the meeting was to develop partnerships and define how the work will proceed over the next seven years. “I am delighted to be taking part in this meeting and I would like to thank the president of the Rio 2016 Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, sports minister Orlando Silva, Governor Sérgio Cabral and Mayor Eduardo Paes. We are going to talk about the operations and challenges involved in organizing the Olympic Games. Rio de Janeiro put on a great campaign and now it’s time to put the projects into practice. All of us share the same goal: to produce exceptional Olympic Games in 2016,” said Felli.

Various themes will be discussed during the Orientation Seminar, including finance, accommodation, security and legal aspects. In addition to Gilbert Felli, the IOC committee comprises Timo Lumme, director of television and marketing services; Christophe Dubi, director of sports; Antony Scanlon, head of Olympic Games coordination, services and operations; Jennifer O’Brien, Olympic Games coordination project manager; Robert Roxburgh, director of press relations; and Toshio Tsurunaga, manager of IOC services for National Olympic Committees. “This meeting is fundamental to further tighten the links between the IOC and the Rio 2016 Committee. We are continuing the work that began in Copenhagen, after Rio was declared the host city for the 2016 Games. The IOC took an historic decision and the Rio 2016 Committee, the three levels of government and the whole city are ready to do what the IOC requires,” said Carlos Arthur Nuzman.

IOC president Jacques Rogge sent a video message, shown at the beginning of the meeting. “Congratulations once more to Rio de Janeiro for being chosen host city for the 2016 Games. However, this victory comes with great responsibility. The IOC placed a lot of faith in Rio de Janeiro and its vision for the Games. We will be in Rio many times and we’ll be working very closely with the Organizing Committee, because history shows that only teamwork produces great achievements,” said Rogge.

After the video was shown, Gilbert Felli handed over IOC flags to the president of the Rio 2016 Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, Minister Orlando Silva, Governor Sérgio Cabral and Mayor Eduardo Paes.
