Exactly a year ago, on October 2nd 2009, Rio de Janeiro went down in history as the first Brazilian city to be chosen to host Olympic and Paralympic Games. To celebrate the date, it was held this Saturday 2nd, a ceremony at the Palacio da Cidade, one of the Rios Town Hall headquarters. On occasion, Rio 2016 Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games President, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, handed the Rio 2016 Olympic Bid Official Report to Mayor Eduardo Paes; executive secretary for the Ministry of Sports, Waldemar de Sousa, who represented the Ministry of Sports, Orlando Silva; and Senator Regis Fichtner, who represented governor Sérgio Cabral The delivery of the Official Report is one of the obligations of the Rio 2016 Committee with the International Olympic Committee. With 233 pages, the document gives details of Rio 2016 candidature from its Applicant City phase, in 2007, to its announced victory in Copenhagen, Denmark. The material includes dozens of pictures of the highlights of the campaign, testimonials from the main international consultants and a DVD with 10 videos. At the celebration of a year of the selection of Rio de Janeiro as the host city for the 2016 Olympic Games, I would like to thank the three levels of government, the Brazilian Paralympic Committee, the athletes, the Rio 2016 Committee and BOC teams, the volunteers and everyone that helped us writing a unique page in the history of our country and our sport. I am happy with the way we are developing the work, which is totally up to date. For us, the Rio 2016 Games have already started, said Carlos Arthur Nuzman. For Mayor Eduardo Paes, October 2nd can be celebrated as one more city anniversary date. Its a day that shall never be forgotten. We will have a new Rio de Janeiro with the 2016 Games and this transformation has already started. The city now has a new role in the international scene and there were growth opportunities in different sectors, said Eduardo Paes. Waldemar de Sousa reminded that the IOC choice brought several challenges to the city, but also generated job and business opportunities. The candidature was victorious for presenting a project with competence and quality. We fullfilled the IOC requirements and won the support of the Brazilians. Now, we will have the chance of promoting the Brazilian culture all over the world, remarked the executive secretary for the Ministery of Sports. Régis Fischtner stated that the course charted during the candidature will be followed in the next phases of the Olympic Games organization. Competence, effort and unity will be the marks of this work, as during the candidature. October 2nd became a special date, imprinted in the memories of everyone. Lets welcome the world really well in 2016, guarenteed the Senator. Three times Olympic medalist in sailing (gold in Atlanta 96 and Athens 2004; bronze in Sydney 2000), Marcelo Ferreira represented the athletes at the ceremony. RIO 2016 COMMITTEE - 1 YEAR OF VICTORY The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decision was announced in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 2nd 2009, during the 121st Assembly of the entity. In the competition, Rio beat Chicago (United States), Madrid (Spain) and Tokyo (Japan). The party of thousands of people on Copacabana Beach symbolized the happiness that swept across Brazil. But the celebration of the Rio 2016 Committee led to a lot of work less than 24 hours after the IOC announcement. After all, the journey to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was just beginning. Still in Copenhagen, Rio 2016 had its first meetings with the IOC. Back to Rio de Janeiro, it was possible to feel the satisfaction of the Brazilians with the historical achievement and, on October 6th, the Olympic flag was already waving at the Town Hall. At the end of October 2009, the IOC was in Rio de Janeiro for the first time to hold the Orientation Seminar and discuss the challenges and the organizational operations for the Olympic Games with the three levels of government and the Rio 2016 Committee. During the event, IOC Olympic Games director, Gilbert Felli, stated that Rio was the city that sooner started its organizational works for the Games. To end such a special year, another moment of celebration. At the Olympic Brazil Prize party, which had the achievement of the Rio 2016 Games as its main theme, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made an emotional speech reminding the united and professional work done during the candidature phase. And the Brazilians one more time showed its excitement with the chance of receiving the biggest sports event on the planet: according to a Datafolha survey, the Brazilians appointed the selection of Rio as an Olympic Games host city as the best news of 2009 The year of 2010 started with the visit of the IOC Coordination Commission for the Rio 2016 Games President, Nawal El Moutawakel, and General Director, Gilbert Felli. During three days in January, meetings with the governments, Olympic facilities visits and to the unities of the Polícia Pacificadora (Pacification Police) were held. The complete Commission, with its 18 members, was in Rio in May. As the Rio 2016 Olympic Games planning advanced, the Organizing Committee for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games was being structured. In February, the initial work chart was presented and, in March, the statute of the new entity was approved by the IOC and, unanimously, by the Olympic Sports Confederations. During these 12 months, one of the Rio 2016 Committee main concerns was to exchange ideas and experiences with organizers of other big sport events. For that reason, the agenda included visits to the London 2012 Committee and the participation in the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games Observers Programs and Debriefing. The partnership with the International Olympic Committee was constant. Besides the Coordination Commission visits, technicians and representatives of the entity were regularly in Rio. Also, several at distance conferences and meetings were held. In February, during the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, Rio 2016 presented its first Progress Report. Four months later, an up-to-date report was delivered to the IOC Executive Committee, in Lausanne. In September representatives of the entity were in Rio for the first follow up of the Olympic project meeting. The Paralympic Games were also in focus, with the completion of the Orientation Seminar of the International Paralympic Committee. At the occasion, the IPC executive director, Xavier Gonzalez, was impressed by the rhythm of the organization of the event. To celebrate the countdown for the six years to the Rio 2016 Games, the Organizing Committee reinforced the importance of the athletes and coaches in the development of the project and presented, on August 5th, the Sports Advisory. The group will have the mission of supporting, with its experiences, the elaboration of the sports program and the Olympic Village project, besides areas such as promotion and legacy. This was also the year the Rio 2016 Games got its face. In April, a workshop on branding and visual identity of the event was held. The same month, a selecting process for the agency that would create the Rio 2016 Games brand was started. In five months of a crystal clear and professional process, the Rio 2016 Committee selected the brand that, after being approved by the IOC, will be presented to the world at the New Years party at Copacabana Beach, on December 31st.
