Rio 2007 Debriefing reinforces the quality of Rio’s candidature for the 2016 Olympic Games

The Rio de Janeiro bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games has just received an important ally.  This Monday, March 10, there was opened in Rio de Janeiro the ‘Rio 2007 Debriefing Seminar’.  The objective of the Seminar is to present the experience acquired with the carrying out of the Rio 2007 Pan American and Parapan American Games and transfer this knowledge to the daily routine of sports and event organizing bodies.  The Seminar follows the model used by the International Olympic Committee for Olympic Games.  This is the first time a Debriefing is carried out in the entire history of the Pan American Games, being therefore one more legacy from Rio 2007.

Until next Saturday, Brazilian and Pan American Olympic Federations, the Brazilian Paraolympic Committee and the Organizing Committees of multisports events, especially in the Americas, will be able to have a close look at all the details involved in the organization of the Rio 2007 Pan American and Parapan American Games.  “This is a commitment of Rio 2007 – to replicate to other countries the knowledge acquired with the organization of the event,” explains Carlos Roberto Osório, Rio 2007 Secretary General.

At the opening of the Seminar, Minister of Sports Orlando Silva Júnior, pointed out the importance of the meeting.  “This Seminar is the closing of the Games and will allow for perpetuating the knowledge Rio 2007 left for sports in Brazil and in the world.  It is a demonstration of maturity and planning for us to win the bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games,” the minister stated.

For Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of the Rio 2007 Organizing Committee and president of the Rio 2016 Bid Committee, the Seminar is a great opportunity to further improve the organization of future multisports events.  “The Rio 2007 Pan American and Parapan American Games left extremely important lessons for the future of sports in Brazil and in the Americas.  Following the initiative IOC has adopted since Athens 2004, this Seminar is intended to extend the knowledge acquired in a great and complex event like Rio 2007 and qualifies the Rio 2016 bid project,” explained Nuzman.

Five Organizing Committees of future Games are taking part in the Rio 2007 Debriefing:  Pan American Games Guadalajara 2011 (Mexico), Central America and Caribbean Games Mayagüez 2010 (Puerto Rico), South American Games Medellín 2010 (Colombia), Bolivarianos Sucre Games 2009 (Bolivia) and Commonwealth Games New Delhi 2010 (India).
