Representatives of the committee rio 2016 attend world conference on sport and environment

By Rio 2016

Representatives from entities related to the Olympic movement and non-governmental environmental organizations took part this Friday and Saturday (the 26th and the 27th) held in Beijing of the 7th World Conference on Sport and Environment. Named as "From planning to action", the event is organized by the International Olympic Committee and the Organizing Committee of the 2008 Games, in association with the Program of the United Nations for the Environment.

With the purpose of obtaining contribution to reinforce the role of the environment in the desire of Rio de Janeiro to be the host city of the Olympic Games 2016, the President of the Committee who is preparing the application of the city, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, and the Committee's General Secretary, Carlos Roberto Osório, took part in the event in the Chinese capital.

Besides the lectures with representatives from well-known NPO such as Greenpeace and WWF, representatives from National Olympic Committees get to know in the event of details of initiatives which helped Beijing 2008 become the "Green Games".

The involvement of the population is considered a key-point for the success of the initiatives prepared by the Organizing Committee for the Games. Initiatives such as one day free of private cars, reduction of emission of gases into the atmosphere, waste of water and creation of environmental awareness campaigns in schools.

The partnership between entities of the Olympic movement and the environmental NPO is not limited to the Games next year. The WWF provides consulting to the organization of London 2012 in the building up of sustainable policies, with the increase of the alternative transportation system in the English capital and the decrease of environmental damages caused by the construction of sports venues.
