President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva emphasised his support for Rio’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games today in London at a press conference overlooking London’s Olympic Park. President Lula was hosted on a visit of the London 2012 Olympic Park by Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) Chairman John Armitt and London 2012 Deputy Chairman Sir Keith Mills before meeting international media.

President Lula was in London this week participating in the G20 Summit and was joined on the tour of the Olympic Park by the Governor of the State of Rio Sergio Cabral, Minister of Sport Orlando Silva, Mayor of Rio Eduardo Paes and President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee Carlos Nuzman.
Referred to as “the most popular politician on earth” by President Barack Obama during the G20 Summit, President Lula reiterated his unwavering commitment to the Rio 2016 bid and highlighted the unified Government support behind the country’s efforts to bring the Games to South America for the first time.

President Lula said: “The Olympic and Paralympic Games in Brazil are an opportunity for the Olympic Movement to inspire a new audience of potential champions and embrace the entire continent of South America. As we have seen this week during the Summit, the world is changing and leaders worldwide are embracing younger, developing economies and seeking to harness the opportunities that they offer.

“Rio is ready, the people of Brazil are ready and I am here today to let you know that I am ready. I hope that the Olympic Family will also recognise this opportunity to inspire more than 180 million young people in South America and enable all of its citizens to discover and participate in the Games. We look forward to collaborating with all the members of the Olympic Family to deliver weeks of wonderful sport and many years of inspiration, social change and sports development.”

Carlos Nuzman, President of Rio 2016, said: “Today’s event once again demonstrates the support and commitment to our bid across all levels of Government. Rio 2016 offers a unique opportunity for the Olympic Movement and international athletes to celebrate the world’s greatest sporting event in a breathtaking setting that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come. The 2016 Games in Rio will build on the investments and opportunities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and, powered by Rio’s energy, deliver technically excellent Games that prioritise of the athletes and create an incredible welcome for all visitors.”
