The best football player ever adds strength to Rio 2016 Bid Committee. On Thursday, August 21, Pelé attended a press conference at Casa Brasil, the Brazilian promotion space in Beijing, to declare his full support to Rio 2016 bid. The event was attended by the president of Rio 2016 Bid Committee and of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) Carlos Arthur Nuzman; Rio 2016 Secretary General Carlos Roberto Osório; and Janeth, the former basketball player, twice Olympic medalist and Rio 2016 Ambassador.
Enthusiastic about Rios 2016 project, Pelé is convinced that hosting large sport competitions could be a factor for social change in Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. Pelé said he was willing to include Rios bid events in his agenda. Hosting 2014 FIFA World Cup and subsequently the Olympic Games in 2016 would be very important, not just to Brazil, but to South America also. Brazil is ready to deliver a great sport and Olympic Movement celebration, Pelé said.
Just like Pelé, Janeth, the former Basketball player and 1994 Brazilian team world champion has also embraced Rios 2016 campaign. When I was a kid, I used to watch on TV my sport idols competing in the Olympic Games. This was one of the reasons why I chose a sport career. I am absolutely sure that an edition of the Games in Rio would inspire many Brazilian youths, she said.
The host city of 2016 Games will be elected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on October 2, 2009, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Rio 2016 Bid Committee president Carlos Arthur Nuzman highlighted the relevance of the support of both Pelé and Janeth to Rios campaign. Pelé and Janeth are famous and loved all-over the world and not just in the sport environment. They have embraced Rio 2016 project and will have a critical role to play in our journey until IOCs final decision is reached, Nuzman explained.
