Pan American Games contribute towards reducing unemployment in Rio de Janeiro

By Site do IBGE

Rio de Janeiro's metropolitan area was the only region to register a drop in the unemployment rate in July, among the seven areas surveyed by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). Hosting the Pan American Games in the city (July 13-29) was a key factor in increasing the region's employment rate.

Rio's unemployment rate fell from 8% in June to 7.1% in the following month. Compared with July 2006, the decrease was even more significant: the unemployment rate in the period was 8.7%.

The region's unemployed total had a 12.5% decrease compared with June. The decrease was even higher compared with July 2006 (18.2%).
Also compared with July 2006, Rio had a better performance in areas including services provided to companies, property rental and real-estate activities (13.6%) and education, health and social services (6.9%).
