After a long and tense qualification process, athletes chosen to represent their country in the Rio 2016 gymnastic events have received the details of when they will be competing. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has completed the draw for the opening rounds of the Olympic competition.

In the men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics events in Rio, a total of 98 gymnasts – 12 teams of five gymnasts and 38 individuals – will compete in the qualification round.

The draw has thrown up one mouth-watering match-up. Eleftherios Petrounias, world champion in the rings, has been put in the same group as reigning Olympic champion and local hero Arthur Zanetti of Brazil.

In the men's team event for artistic gymnastics, defending champions China have been drawn in group 3, alongside Ukraine, Russia and Switzerland. Great Britain, France, Germany and the USA will compete in group 2.  The Dutch men's team, who will be competing in the Olympic Games for the first time, will take on hosts Brazil, Japan and the Republic of Korea in group 1.

In the women's team artistic gymnastics event, defending Olympic champions the USA will compete against the Netherlands in group 4. Belgium and China have been paired in group 1, Italy and Russia in group 2 and Great Britain, Brazil and Germany in group 3. Teams from Japan, France and Canada will compete in group 5.

Israel will get the group event underway, followed by host nation Brazil. Defending champions Russia will compete in sixth place. Eight teams will qualify for the final.

All the gymnastics events will be staged at Rio Olympic Arena from 6 to 21 August.
