Jorgensen the triathlete to catch

American Gwen Jorgensen is considered the woman to beat in Copacabana, having gone undeafeated in a dozen races during the build-up to Rio 2016. Given her dominance in the run, any would-be challengers will have to build up a lead in the swimming and cycling sections to stand a chance.

Those likely to be in the mix with Jorgensen - at least during the swim and cycle - include Bermuda’s Flora Duffy, New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt, and the British trio of Vicky Holland, Helen Jenkins and Non Stanford. Switzerland’s London 2012 Olympic champion Nicola Spirig will also be looking to make history by retaining her title.

Park for the course

The Republic of Korea’s Inbee Park is ahead in the race to be crowned the first Olympic champion since 1900, holding a two-shot lead over America's Gerina Piller and New Zealand's Lydia Ko.

The competition has already provided drama, including two holes-in-one (by Ko and China's Lin Xiyu), and the withdrawal of Thailand's Ariya Jutanugarn, who led after the opening day, due to injury.

Brazil crave redemption

The Maracana match-up offers Germany a shot at another famous victory on Brazilian soil, potentially adding the Olympic title to their 7-1 World Cup semi-final triumph in 2014. The match will pit the free-scoring German team against a Brazilian side hungry for revenge after the humiliation two years ago. And this time, they'll have Neymar on the pitch.

Brazil are yet to concede a goal after five matches at Rio 2016, although that might be put to the test against a German side who have found the opposition net 21 times so far. Their forwards Nils Petersen and Serge Gnabry are the competition's joint top scorers with six goals apiece.

China aim to end difficult campaign on a high

China have a chance to make up for what has been a disappointing campaign in the Rio 2016 badminton competition so far, with a gold and a bronze on offer for Chen Long and Lin Dan respectively in the men's singles.

Chen Long brushed aside Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and now faces Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei who beat Lin Dan in a dramatic men's singles semi-final. Lee's victory denied the Chinese athlete a chance for a third gold, and ensured that the top two seeds will contest the Olympic final.

USA hot favourite against Spain

The USA and Spain will meet in the women's basketball final after both teams won their semi-finals convincingly on Thursday (18 August) - the Americans defeated France 86-67, while Spain overcame Serbia 68-54. In the group stage of the tournament, the USA comfortably beat Spain 103-63, however, making them firm favourites for the final.

Who will be crowned 'queen of the mountain'?

A mix of climbs, steep descents and hazards will require tactical guile, aerobic fitness and bike-handling skills for 30 Olympic hopefuls at the Mountain Bike Centre.

Reigning world champion Annika Langvad of Denmark, Lea Davison of the USA, Canada’s Emily Batty, 2015 world champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévot of France and German 2008 gold medallist Sabine Spitz, a three-time Olympic medallist back for her fifth Games, are likely to be competing for podium places.

Farah going for one Mo' record

Following his victory in the 10,000m, Britain’s Mo Farah is trying to make a rare piece of Olympic history in defending his title in the 5000m as well as the longer event, a feat achieved only by Finland’s Lasse Viren, at Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976.

Another highlight on the track will be the two 4x400m relays. In the men's one-lap event, Jamaica and USA were the quickest qualifiers, while outsiders Botswana have been tipped as a team to watch. It looks to be a similar story in the women's competition, with the 'big two' of sprinting at Rio 2016 also qualifying fastest, with Canada, Great Britain, and Ukraine in the hunt for the bronze.

The men's javelin and 1500m will also be contested, as will the women's high jump and 800m.

Handball to see new champion

A new Olympic champion will be crowned in the women’s handball competition, as France take on Russia. Norway were denied their shot at a third successive gold medal after a narrow loss to the unbeaten Russian side, and will instead face the Netherlands for the bronze.

France's women have never taken handball gold and while Russia has not yet reached the top of the podium in the sport, the USSR did claim victories in 1976 and 1980.

Serbia look to make it another upset against China

China will meet Serbia in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games women's volleyball final on Saturday at the Maracanazinho.

China beat the Netherlands 3-1 in a close semi-final after Serbia had caused a big upset earlier in the day with a shock 3-2 win over the USA.

Despite the stubborn resistance offered by the Dutch team, the Chinese world champions will be considered favourites to overcome Serbia, although the underdogs should not be ruled out after their stunning semi-final win.

Adams looking to make history

The day’s three boxing finals will start with London 2012 gold medallist Nicola Adams of Great Britain defending her title against France’s Sarah Ourahmoune. The flyweight is the only woman to have taken gold in the event, which debuted in London.

She is also reigning world, Commonwealth and European Games champion. For challenger Sarah Ourahmoune, it’s a last chance for Olympic glory: the Frenchwoman plans to retire after Rio 2016.

It’s also big day for Cuba as Robeisy Ramirez takes on American Shakur Stevenson in the men’s bantamweight competition, and compatriot Arlen Lopez meets Uzbekistan’s Bektemir Melikuziev for the middleweight gold.
