Rio 2016 Committee Infrastructure Director underlines the significance of this critical subject to the preparation of the Candidature File to be delivered to the IOC

New Cedae works provide further evidence of Rio 2016 candidature commitment with the environment

Cedae has just started the operation of the Marapendi Sewage Pumping Station, the most important of the works of the  Barra da Tijuca, Jacarepaguá and Recreio dos Bandeirantes Sanitation Program. During the event, on Thursday, Governor  Sérgio Cabral and  Rio 2016 Candidature Committee Infrastructure Director Alexandre Techima underlined that the venture is part of Rio’s candidature commitment with the environment.

Techima stated that the concern with the environment is one of the key commitments of Rio 2016 candidature before the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

- This start-up is a key factor for the selection of  Rio de Janeiro as the host city of the Olympic Games 2016, once the environmental issues are a critical aspect of the Candidature File we will be delivering to the IOC - Techima explained.

The event was also attended by the Minister of the Environment Carlos Minc, and Cedae’s CEO  Wagner Victer. The Pumping Station is capable of collecting and pumping sewage from 50 housing projects in  Barra da Tijuca and 150 people will benefit from this project that will prevent the daily discharge of about 160 million of liters of sewage in the Jacarepaguá, Marapendi, Camorim and Tijuca Lagoons.

On June 9,  Cedae had already started the Downtown Rio Sewage Collection Trunk System, completing one of the phases of the Guanabara Bay Cleaning Program. The works are now avoiding the discharge of more than 80 million liters per day of sewage in the Guanabara Bay.
