On 22 August 2008, Maurren Maggi flew in the Bird’s Nest in Beijing, landed 7.04 metres forward, one centimetre ahead of Russian Tatyana Lebedeva, and became the first Brazilian Olympic champion in individual events. Five years later, she celebrates the unprecedented long jump achievement with a visit to the Organising Committee for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Cidade Nova neighbourhood in Rio de Janeiro.

“I’m celebrating this date with various people who were with me on the other side of the world in that historical day. Celebrating this date here in the Rio 2016 Committee is very inspiring”, said the athlete.

Maurren participated in the bimonthly meeting of the Rio 2016 Sports Advisory Committee, made of Brazilian sports personalities that help the Committee with decisions relating to the sports venues and the Olympic and Paralympic Villages, besides cooperating in the promotion of the Games ideals all over Brazil and the world.

The meeting was attended by the President of the Rio 2016 Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, as well as by other Brazilian sports icons, who celebrated the anniversary of Maurren’s victory in the Beijing Olympic Games. Among the people that attended the meeting were: Carlos Alberto Parreira, Brazil National Football Team Coordinator; Rosicléia Campos, Brazil Women’s National Judo Team Coach; Soraya Carvalho, a former gymnast that is seven months pregnant; Ádria dos Santos, a sprinter that holds 14 Paralympic medals, including four golds; and Ricardinho, two-time champion in Football 5-a-side.
