Margarita Mamun won gold in rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around at the Rio Olympic Arena to give Russia its fifth consecutive gold medal in the event. Mamun's performance outscored the three-time world champion and fellow Russian Yana Kudryavtseva.
The silver medal for Kudryavtseva means Russia wins gold and silver in this event at the Olympic Games for the third time, after 2004 and 2012. The only other events in which Russia has won five Olympic Games in a row are duets and team synchronised swimming.

Mamun, a runner-up to Kudryavtseva at the world championships each of the last two years, posted a total score of 76.483. The 20-year-old put up the top score on clubs and the second-best score among the 10 finalists on hoop, ribbon and ball. Kudryavtseva was close behind on 75.608.
The 18-year-old Kudryavtseva failed to catch one of her clubs during the end of her club routine, which gave Mamun breathing space.
Mamun said she hadn't noticed the mistake. "I wasn't aware of her mistakes because we were in different places at that time. I was changing my costume and Yana was performing. I only got the chance to see the scores after we had both done our ribbon routine (in the last rotation). I was really surprised about Yana making such a mistake because Yana is always very focused and calm, and never nervous.
"I wasn't thinking about the results. I was just trying not to make any mistakes and listen to the instructions of my coach (Amina Zaripova)."

Yana Kudryavtseva said she was relaxed ahead of the routine, and was surprised to make the mistake at the end of her routine. "It all happened very quickly and I didn't manage to quickly find a way to solve the mistake. That's why I lost the club. I've been competing for 13 years, so of course this has happened before. Sometimes at the end of my routines, I'm too relaxed and I think I already have an apparatus in my hand when I don't. That is what happened today.
"At the end of (the clubs) routine, I realised I was not going to win the gold medal. That's why emotionally I was a little bit more relaxed and I was competing for myself, my coach and the spectators. I wanted to give them a good performance."
Ganna Rizatdinova of Ukraine earned bronze, and said she was delighted. "I gave all my time and all of my energy and emotions and I'm grateful to the whole team and the country who were cheering for me. I felt like the whole country was with me until the very last moment. When I was going into my last routine with the ribbon I realised that there was a high chance that I could be in third place.
"This is a very cruel sport. I know that if I would have dropped the ribbon once that I would have not won a bronze medal. I let go of the situation and I left it in God's hands. I just did my job and I'm glad I succeeded. . Believe it or not, even if you win a silver or bronze, it still means a gold to the person who wins it.""
