Lee Chong Wei and Carolina Marin have been confirmed as the top seeds for the Olympic badminton competition, based on the latest world rankings released on Thursday (21 July).

Malaysia’s Lee and Spain’s Marin lead 13 seeds for the men's and women's singles draws, which will be made on 26 July along with the draws for men's, women's and mixed doubles.

Lee, a silver medallist at the past two Olympic Games and the winner of two world superseries titles this season, is followed in the men's seedings by China's two-time world champion Chen Long and two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan.

In women’s singles, two-time world champion Marin heads the field in front of China's Wang Yihan and defending Olympic champion Li Xuerui.

The men’s singles draw will consist of 41 players in 13 groups, while in women’s singles, 40 competitors will be divided into 13 groups. Each group will have one seed. The draw in doubles will have four groups of four pairs; each group will include a seeded pair.

The full list of the men’s and women's singles seeds, plus the leaders for the the doubles can be seen here.

Thailand’s in-form Ratchanok Intanon, winner of three world superseries titles this year, was relieved to be cleared of doping this week and is women's singles seed no.4.

India’s Saina Nehwal, Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara, Republic of Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun and Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying are also among the top eight seeds.

Of the few Europeans seeded, Kirsty Gilmour of Great Britain is the no.11 in the women's competition. Her compatriot in the men's event, Rajiv Ouseph, is the no.13 seed. Germany's Marc Zwiebler is no.12 in the men's competition.

The Great Britain team has been warming up for the Rio 2016 Games with many of Europe's top players at a three-day training camp in Birmingham this week.

Jon Austin, performance director and Olympic team leader, said: “We organised this training camp as part of our plans to give our players the best possible preparations before they fly to Rio for the Games."

Players from Germany, France, Ireland, Poland and Denmark are also participating, taking the opportunity to train together with rivals in the lead-up period.

In the doubles, there are only four seeds in each of the three categories. Korea’s Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong head the men’s doubles seedings, ahead of Indonesian world champions Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan. Republic of Korea’s Kim Gi Jung/Kim Sa Rang and China’s Fu Haifeng/Zhang Nan are seeded no.3 and no.4 respectively.

Japan’s Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi, in top form with three world superseries crowns, have top billing in the women’s doubles. China’s challenge will be led by second seeds Tang Yuanting/Yu Yang. Indonesia’s Greysia Polii/Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Republic of Korea’s Jung Kyung Eun/Shin Seung Chan secured seeded positions no.3 and no.4.

In the mixed doubles, defending champions Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei of China are top-seeded followed by Republic of Korea’s Ko Sung Hyun/Kim Ha Na, winners of the Singapore Open.
