Is there an expansion plan for Rio’s metro system for the 2016 Games?

By Rio 2016

Even before the Games, Rio’s population will benefit from an expansion of the metro system. Until 2010 there will be a new station at Cidade Nova, close to the City Hall building, enabling southbound users of line 2 to reach their destination directly without changing trains at Estação Estácio. The Rio 2016 Committee has also designed a high capacity, high frequency transportation system, at a significantly lower cost and capable of fully meeting city needs. Adding high capacity to comfort, the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system will establish a bus corridor, running on exclusive and segregated lanes, with boarding and disembarking stations. The system will be integrated to the Metro System at Praça General Osório and will provide a fast and safe connection to the Alvorada terminal.
