The International Table Tennis Federation has approved the proposed facilities in Rio de Janeiros bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games. For Rio 2016, competitions will be held at Riocentro, which hosted the 2007 Pan American Games table tennis competitions.
The International Olympic Committee requires all bidding cities to have their facilities approved by the relevant international sports federations. The proposed facilities fulfill table tennis standards and have been approved, should Rio de Janeiro be chosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games, said the executive director of the table tennis federation, Jordi Serra, in a statement sent to the Rio 2016 bid committee.
The table tennis competitions would be held at pavilion 3 in Riocentro, a large convention center, which has capacity for 5,000 spectators. The Riocentro complex was much used during the 2007 Rio Pan American Games. The ITTF approval shows that the investment and modernization of the facilities for the Pan American Games made the place suitable for large-scale competitions, said the Rio 2016 bids president, Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
