According to the findings of research by global research company ORC Worldwide, Rio de Janeiro would be the most cost-effective 2016 Candidate City for those travelling to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

ORC Worldwide examined prices of a representative market basket of 200 goods and services in each 2016 Candidate City - Chicago, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo - and compared them to London, the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Host City.

The results show that Rio is 18% less expensive than London, followed by Chicago (11%) and Madrid (3%), while Tokyo’s prices were reported as 42% higher than London.

The research highlights the affordability of transport in Rio, where travelling by bus or metro “is by far the cheapest” of the four candidate cities.  The report also notes “celebrating a gold medal with a glass of beer is currently the most affordable in Rio.”

The independent survey supports Rio’s belief that the combination of cost-effectiveness, passionate and hospitable locals (Cariocas), beautiful landscapes and ideal climate makes the city an ideal location for fans travelling to the Games.

Rio 2016 Bid President, Carlos Nuzman, welcomed the findings of the research: “We look forward to the possibility of welcoming the world to Rio in 2016.  Providing an Olympic and Paralympic Games which is affordable to the widest range of people – particularly young people – is a key element of our bid.  Rio 2016 would be a thrilling and unique Games and we aim to ensure that this experience is accessible.  We believe that Rio’s affordability, welcoming locals and stunning scenery would excite all visitors if we were chosen as the Host City for the Games in 2016.”
