Tourists who come to Rio for business reasons would like to come back.  This is one of the conclusions of the survey on the Economic Impact of the International Events Held in Brazil, disclosed on Wednesday, at the Copacabana Palace Hotel. The survey, presented by Embratur president Jeanine Pires together with Rio de Janeiro Convention & Visitors Bureau do Rio de Janeiro, was contracted to Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) by the Ministry of Tourism.

The survey stared in September last year and covered 14 international congresses, seminars and workshops held in seven Brazilian municipalities. Rio de Janeiro played a special role by hosting six of these events, attended by 3,577 tourists from 16 countries, in five continents.

Results show that 86.7% of respondents said they intended to come back to the city, and 30% of them within 2 years. Besides, 82.9% stated that the image they had of Rio de Janeiro had improved or stayed positive after the trip.  In a multiple-choice answer questionnaire participants reported that leisure would be their primary drive for coming back  (78.7%) and business reasons came second (34%).

The survey is part of the policy of support to actions designed to bring international events to Brazil, which is now one of the 10 top destinations in the planet. According to the ranking published by ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association), Brazil is number one among Latin American countries and Rio de Janeiro ranks five among the cities in the Americas hosting the largest number of events.

After the presentation, the president of Embratur underlined several other actions targeting promotion of Brazil in 13 countries and full support to Rio’s candidacy to host 2016 Olympic Games. To her, the success of the Pan American Games in 2007 and the FIFA World Cup in 2014 represent the assurance of a great opportunity to prepare the city for the Games.

- If Rio is selected to host the Olympic Games, we will be experiencing  an extraordinary moment not just for tourism, but also for our infrastructure and image abroad – Jeanine said.
