Saturday 4 August 2012 is a date that will live for ever in the history of British athletics, the day when, in front of a delirious home crowd at the Olympic Stadium, in London three of the country's most popular athletes won gold medals, one after the other, in the space of just 44 minutes.

Those three heroes will all be competing again at Rio 2016, Team GB confirmed on Wednesday (13 July). Jessica Ennis-Hill, gold medallist in the heptathlon, long jump champion Greg Rutherford and long-distance running legend Mo Farah will all have the chance to relive their success.

Four years ago, Farah wrapped up 'Super Saturday' by winning the 10,000m before going on to complete a memorable double by triumphing in the 5000m just one week later.

‘I’m putting my body through hell every day to make sure I do myself proud in Rio,’ says Mo Farah

At Rio, the legendary trio of Farah, Ennis-Hill and Rutherford will all be defending their titles.

Ennis-Hill, who had her first child in 2014, said: “Everything’s coming together now and I’m feeling good. There’s still some time left before Rio to put some work in as well.

“London was an incredible experience and the two journeys to London and Rio have been completely different, which I’ve really enjoyed. If I was able to defend my title in Rio it will certainly be one of my greatest achievements.”

In total, Team GB will be sending an 80-strong athletics team to next month's Olympic Games.

As well as the stars of Super Saturday, London 2012 silver medallist Christine Ohuruogu, 32 years old, who won Olympic gold at Beijing 2008, will be competing in the 400m again. Joining her will be 28-year-old high jumper Robbie Grabarz, a bronze medallist in London.

Five times an Olympian

Meanwhile, veteran Jo Pavey is set to compete in her fifth Olympic Games in the 10,000m. The 42-year-old mother of two will be the first British track athlete to become a five-time Olympian. Pavey won gold in the 10,000m at the European championships in Zurich in 2014, at the age of 40.

“I’m absolutely thrilled,” Pavey told The Telegraph. “When you’re a young girl dreaming of going to the Olympics, you never think you could be going to five. Never in my wildest dreams a few years back did I think I would be competing at the Olympics at my age."

British athletes have enjoyed a successful 12 months in the build-up to Rio 2016 with the team winning seven medals at the Beijing 2015 world championships. Ennis-Hill, Farah and Rutherford all claimed gold while Shara Proctor took long jump silver and there were bronze medals for the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams.

Last week, the team won 16 medals at the European championships in Amsterdam: five gold, three silver and eight bronze.

Athletics team leader Neil Black said: “There’s a real blend of experience and exciting new talent. This is the best-prepared and arguably strongest team we have ever selected. We believe the world-class level of performances this group can achieve will see us challenging for a number of places on the podium.”
