The transformation of the Rio de Janeiro city is more evident every day. Through a series of infrastructure works run by the government, the city is getting prepared to receive millions of people in the greatest sporting event in the planet.

The transformation of the Rio de Janeiro city is more evident every day. Through a series of infrastructure works run by the government, the city is getting prepared to receive millions of people in the greatest sporting event in the planet. More efficient transportation systems, implementation of social projects and construction of Olympic equipment: all of these will provide an amazing experience to the audience, but, above all, it will ensure a legacy to Brazilian people and sport that will remain after the Games.

TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE

BRT (Bus Rapid Transit)

The city of Rio de Janeiro has more than 6 million people and an area of about 1 182,296 km2. Cariocas can take till two hours to get to work in a trajectory full of mountains and seashores. In order to allow people to get more quickly to their destinations, Rio de Janeiro government decided to implement the BRT system in the city.

The first BRT system was constructed in another Brazilian city, located in the South region: Curitiba. Nowadays, BRT system facilitates the life of people of more than 30 countries in the five continents. The operation structure resembles the one used in trains: exclusive or preferential roadways to buses; pre-paid system; non-cost line transfer; quick embark and disembark stations.

The implementation of BRT system in Rio de Janeiro will significantly reduce the time people take to get to their destinations inside the city and contribute to the reordering of the transportation system. For the population, more convenience, celerity, comfort and efficient services.

Transcarioca, transoeste e transolímpica are BRT ongoing projects catalysed by the Olympic and Paralympic Games to be carried out in the Rio de Janeiro city. It will enable a direct link between the four clusters of the Rio 2016 Games. Check out the photo gallery and more details below.



Transcarioca

Transcarioca is an express way exclusive for articulated buses that will link Barra da Tijuca, the heart of the Games, to Tom Jobim International Airport located in Ilha do Governador, crossing Madureira and Penha neighbourhoods, at the north zone of Rio de Janeiro city.

  • 39km of extension, connection with subway, train and bicycle way;
  • about 400 thousand passengers  per day will use the service;
  • 45 stations, 4 embark and disembark terminals;
  • 4 underpasses, 10 flyovers e 9 bridges.

 

Transoeste

Transoeste is an expressway that links Barra da Tijuca to Santa Cruz, two west zone neighbourhoods of Rio.

  • • 32km of extension
  • • 30 BRT stations
  • • 50% reduction of travel time between the two neighbourhoods.

Aerial shooting about Transoeste shows the transformation the expressway is causing on the region. It is possible to see, side by side, images made in January and April.


Transolímpica

The way will be an express bus corridor that will link two important regions of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games: Barra da Tijuca and Deodoro. Crossing the neighbourhoods of Taquara, Curicica, Sulacap and Magalhães Bastos, the expressway will end at Avenida Brasil, one of the main access roads to the city. The works are expected to start in January, 2012.

  • • 26km of extension;
  • • 18 planned stations and 2 terminals;
  • • 100 thousand passengers per day will use the service;
  • • 30km of interconnected bicycle way.

  • Subway line 4

The rock perforation towards the South Zone has already reached 900 metres. The next two months, it will start the detonations of São Conrado massif to Barra. Line 4 will have six stations, crossing Barra da Tijuca, São Conrado, Gávea, Leblon and Ipanema. Because of the extension, Rio’s subway will be able to carry more than 230 thousand passengers per day. The construction works of the 14 kilometres of distance line will be finished by December 15th, 2015.

OLYMPIC EQUIPMENT

Olympic Park international public competition

The Olympic Park international public competition is at proposals judgment period. On 20 July, registrations were closed to projects whose goal was to propose architectural solutions to host competitions of 11 Paralympic and 10 Olympic sports, those last ones totalizing 15 disciplines. Furthermore, the winning project, to be announced on 15 August, must contain proposals for media centre, hotel, partners village and hospitality area, among others, within the region of the Rio Olympic Park, Barra da Tijuca.


Rock City

Rock City, located in the west zone of Rio, is getting prepared to receive Rock in Rio music festival and to be the future Athlete’s Leisure Village in the 2016 Games. Check out the progress of the works.

Olympic Port competition

The area of old Leopoldina train station will have a new luxury hotel with 45 floors, Conventions Centres, plus the Media Village and other major 2016 Games facilities. All of this integrated with public spaces, like gardens and squares.


Sambódromo

The first phase of Sambódromo’s transformation was concluded in June, when Brahma’s old brewery was imploded. The location will be the start and finish points to the marathon and the stage of Archery competitions in the Rio 2016 Games.
