High-tech drones will be taking over the skies above Rio de Janeiro from Monday (13 June) until Friday, as the Drone Week event run by industrial giant GE comes to Brazil for the first time.

Drone Week will provide a bird's eye-view of Olympic venues and insight into the innovative technologies that GE is contributing to the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, from data analytics for the Brazilian canoeing team to power and lighting for Olympic venues and infrastructure.

In total, five films of 15 to 20 minutes will be shown live on the Facebook page of GE in Brazil. In the opening event on Monday, five drones will fly in a synchronised "ballet" at the GE Global Research Centre in Rio.

On Friday, drones will stream live images of the Carioca Arenas, followed by a discussion about intelligent lighting technologies. GE is providing the lighting systems for six venues of Rio 2016, including the Maracanã Stadium. It is also donating an LED system that will light up Flamengo Park and the popular nightlife area of Lapa, reducing electricity costs and improving security.

Drone week: the schedule (all times local time)

- Tuesday (14 June), 2pm. Technology and Olympic canoeing: how big data is helping Brazil's canoeing team for Rio 2016. Live from the Marapendi lagoon.

- Wednesday (15 June), 2pm. How the use of technologies initially developed for the healthcare and offshore exploration industries can improve the performance of elite athletes. Live from the GE Global Research Centre.

- Thursday (16 June), 2pm. Energy for the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Live streaming from the giant Itaipu hydroelectric power station to the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) in Barra Olympic Park. GE is providing the IBC with all its electrical distribution needs, or enough energy to supply a city of 220,000 people.

- Friday (17 June), 5.20pm. Closing ceremony. Live streaming from the Carioca Arenas, another venue in Barra Olympic Park where GE is providing the lighting system.
