It will be raining medals between 10 and 13 August at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Athletes will go into battle in 29 sports disciplines, with podium places up for grabs in 87 finals across the four days. With the competition schedule published and tickets on sale, now is the time to start planning your Games. To help you put together your schedule, in the second part of our special series, we present some of the highlights between 10 and 13 August 2016:
10 AUGUST

Contested against the stunning backdrop promised by the Grumari circuit, the road cycling time trials are set to thrill spectators. Medals will also be won in another 10 sports, including slalom canoeing, artistic gymnastics, swimming, rowing and table tennis. Meanwhile, the basketball, boxing, football, handball, hockey, water polo, rugby, tennis, volleyball and beach volleyball tournaments will continue.
Some highlights:
- Road cycling time trials in the Barra zone
- Group stage men’s football matches in Belo Horizonte, Salvador and Brasília
- Men’s individual all-round final in artistic gymnastics at Rio Olympic Arena
- Start of the equestrian dressage competition at Deodoro Olympic Park
- Finals of men’s (-90kg) and women’s (-70kg) judo at Carioca Arena 2
- Women’s table tennis semi-finals and final at Riocentro Pavilion 3
11 AUGUST

Badminton, track cycling and golf enter the fray on 11 August, opening up three more Olympic venues – Riocentro Pavilion 4, Rio Olympic Velodrome and the Olympic Golf Course. Day six will also feature medal events in 11 sports, including the women’s individual all-round event in artistic gymnastics, four swimming finals and the men’s rugby sevens.
Some highlights:
- Start of the badminton tournament at Riocentro Pavilion 4
- The team sprint finals in track cycling at the Velodrome
- Women’s individual all-round final in artistic gymnastics at Rio Olympic Arena
- Start of the golf tournament – the sport is returning to the Games after 112 years
- Swimming finals: men’s 200m backstroke and 200m medley, women’s 100m freestyle and 200m breaststroke
- Men’s rugby sevens final at Deodoro Stadium
- Women’s individual archery final at the Sambódromo
12 AUGUST

One week after the opening ceremony, the Games will be in full flow. Athletics, arguably the most symbolic of Olympic sports, will start with medals awarded in the men’s race walk and the women’s shot put and 10000m. In the pool, the men’s 50m freestyle final will define ‘the fastest swimmer on the planet’. Meanwhile, the trampolinists will bounce into action at the Rio Olympic Arena. Medals will also be awarded in track cycling, fencing, equestrian dressage, judo, weightlifting, swimming, rowing, tennis, archery and shooting.

- Start of athletics, with medals in the men’s race walk at Pontal and women’s shot put and 10000m in the Olympic Stadium
- Men’s and women’s boxing quarter-finals at Riocentro Pavilion 6
- Start of trampoline gymnastics at the Rio Olympic Arena
- Team final in equestrian dressage at Deodoro Olympic Park
- Men’s doubles final and singles semi-finals at the Olympic Tennis Centre
13 AUGUST

The main man, Usain Bolt, can be seen in action for the first time, in the 100m heats at the Olympic Stadium. The football and beach volleyball tournaments will reach the quarter-finals and last 16 stages, respectively. There will be medal events in nine disciplines – athletics, track cycling, fencing, trampoline gymnastics, weightlifting, swimming, rowing, tennis and shooting.
- Men’s long jump and women’s 100m finals at the Olympic Stadium
- Men’s football quarter-finals in Salvador, Belo Horizonte and Brasília
- First phase of women’s water polo at the Julio de Lamare Aquatics Centre
- Men’s and women’s rowing finals in single sculls and eights at Lagoa Stadium
- Women’s singles final at the Olympic Tennis Centre
- Last 16 matches at the Beach Volleyball Arena
