Rio’s lively shoreline was even more colorful for Sunday’s Rio de Janeiro Marathon. Approximately 14 thousand runners were there for the three events scheduled in the Marathon program (Marathon, Half-Marathon and  Family Run), with start lines in different locations but all finishing at  Aterro do Flamengo. Along the 42,195 km course marathoners were cheered by large crowds and strategically positioned  DJs and bands.

Domingos Nonato da Silva (2h17min20) won the men’s race and Marizete Moreira dos Santos (2h39min09) was the first woman to cros the finish line of the Marathon that had started at Recreio dos Bandeirantes.  The top male finisher of the Half-Marathon that started at  Praia do Pepê, in Barra da Tijuca, was Luis Paulo da Silva (1h04min08) and the women’s winner was  Simone Alves da Silva (1h19min15). The top male and female  runners of the Family Run (6km), with start and finish line at  the Aterro do Flamengo, were Marcio Souza (18min11) and  Ana Cristina Pimenta (22min31).

- Everything was perfect and once more Rio proved to be fully prepared to host large sporting events, large celebrations. The Marathon is getting better every year. I wish to thank all cariocas,  runners and tourists who came to Rio this weekend to race. More than 1 thousand tourists from abroad entered the race and this is a new record. We managed to add together a top level group of marathoners and excellent entertainment. I must thank the city hall, the state of Rio de Janeiro and our sponsors for their full support. We hope next year’s marathon will be even better - said Marcus Vinícius Freire, from Dream Factory Sports –one of event organizers - who is also a  BOC technical director.
