The Federal Government’s support for Rio’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games was reaffirmed today to the 13 members of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Evaluation Commission.

The presentation of Theme 3 – Political and Economic Climate – featured Presidential Chief of Staff, Minister Dilma Rousseff, Sports Minister Orlando Silva and Henrique Meirelles, President of the Central Bank.

According to Dilma Rousseff, the Federal Government considers the 2016 Games in Rio as a significant opportunity for Brazil. The Chief of Staff also stressed the guarantees presented in Rio’s Candidature File.

“The meeting with the Evaluation Commission was very productive. We reiterated the country’s economic and structural capacity to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We did not just speak on behalf of the current Government, we sought to demonstrate Brazil’s strong track record of respecting contracts and agreements across different administrations and always delivering on our promises. The commitment of the Federal, State and Municipal governments was definitely made clear to the IOC commission members during our presentation today,” said Rousseff.

The Brazilian economy’s relative strength should be considered as one of the Rio 2016 bid’s considerable assets, argued Henrique Meirelles.

“The country’s financial stability and its ability to afford the expenditure for the Games are important factors in the choice of Host City by IOC members. During our meeting with the Evaluation Commission members, we spoke about the evolution of Brazil and its public finances. Our country has a mature profile and we can demonstrate that by 2016, the economy will be solid and well able to support the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” explained the Central Bank President.

Sports minister Orlando Silva reiterated that the responsibilities of each level of Government were made clear to the Evaluation Commission members. “Once again, we had detailed answers for all questions and I believe the Evaluation Commission members were very satisfied with our input,” he concluded.
