11 highlights of Saturday 20 August at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games

By Rio 2016

The hosts’ football team took gold today, as did new champions in triathlon, badminton and golf, while Mo Farah and Nicola Adams added to their collection of Olympic titles

Jorgensen runs away with triathlon title

USA's Gwen Jorgensen confirmed her position as the pre-eminent triathlete of her generation when she raced to an emphatic Olympic triumph on the Copacabana seafront, hitting the afterburners two kilometres from the finish, leaving her closest rival Nicola Spirig trailing to take the gold medal.

Jorgensen became the first defending world triathlon champion to win the Olympic crown the following year, as she dominated her rivals in the 10km run to win in one hour, 56 minutes and 16 seconds, some 40 seconds clear of Swiss defending champion Spirig.

Vicky Holland eventually sprinted away from Great Britain compatriot Non Stanford to pip her friend and make the podium.

Adams repeats historic feat

Great Britain's Nicola Adams was at her energetic best taking on Sarah Ourahmoune in the women's flyweight final, becoming the first British boxer to retain an Olympic title for 92 years by winning the gold medal. The 33-year-old from Yorkshire swept the scorecards 39-37 to become the first two-time women's Olympic boxing champion.

Ourahmoune rallied in the second and third rounds to keep the fight closer than expected, but Adams won the decisive fourth round on all three cards and thumped her chest and pointed toward the sky when the decision was announced.

Olympic golf a walk in the Park

Inbee Park cruised to victory with a five-shot margin, with Lydia Ko of New Zealand taking silver and Shanshan Feng of China picked up the bronze.

The Hall of Famer never looked like loosening her grip on the gold as she struck birdie after birdie. The gold was the Republic of Korea's 20th, making Rio 2016 the eighth straight summer Olympics at which the country has won at least that many medals.

Chen not to be denied by Lee

Chen Long won gold in the men's singles final on his second attempt, defeating Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, who had to settle for a third-straight Olympic silver medal. The Chinese athlete walked away from London 2012 with bronze but has risen to the top of badminton's ranks since then, winning the last two world championships.

Lee will have felt his time had come after defeating China’s Lin Dan in the semi-final, but another top Chinese player rained on his parade.

Magnificent, unbeatable USA

Team USA won another gold medal with a comfortable 101-72 win against Spain, continuing a winning streak dating back to Barcelona 1992. Having defeated Spain by 40 points in the preliminary round, USA were strong favourites coming into the gold medal match and did not disappoint, claiming their sixth consecutive Olympic gold in women's basketball. Lindsay Whalen and Diana Taurasi led the US scoring with 17 points apiece, while Spain’s Alba Torrens scored a game-high 18 points.

France find Russia too hard to handle

A hard-fought final with the lowest scoring total in Olympic women's history saw Russia take a four-goal advantage with five minutes to go then grind out the win. The game was just as close when the two teams met in the preliminaries and Russia came out on top by one point.

Serbia crowned kings of the pool

Serbia's wait for an Olympic men's water polo title is over, after they over-powered defending champions Croatia 11-7 (3-2, 3-1, 3-2, 2-2) in the gold medal match at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.

Neymar the redeemer as Brazil strike gold

Brazil beat Germany in a penalty shoot-out to end their long wait for an Olympic Games football gold medal in the most dramatic of circumstances at an emotionally charged Maracanã.

After a 1-1 draw in normal time, and no goals in the extra 30 minutes, the hosts' talisman Neymar stepped up to score the winning spot-kick and seal a 5-4 shoot-out win after goalkeeper Weverton had saved Germany's fifth penalty, taken by Nils Petersen.

Farah completes his golden double-double

Following his victory in the 5000m and 10,000m at Rio 2016, Great Britain’s Mo Farah became the first man in 40 years to retain both titles. He was in control throughout the latter stages of the race, always near the front while other competitors came and dropped back. In the end, Ethiopia’s Hagos Gebrhiwet took silver, and American Bernard Lagat claimed bronze.

USA dominate 4x400m relays

The US women were first to secure another sprinting gold, making that the sixth for Allyson Felix, who anchored the team in a time of 3:19.06, a new season’s best. They were followed by Jamaica in 3:20.34 seconds, with Great Britain coming third over five seconds behind.

Their male team-mates duly delivered a similarly seamless display of sprinting prowess, with a time of 2:57.30 leaving Jamaica second with 2:58.16 and the Bahamas with the bronze in 2:58.29. Botswana were the surprise package, holding second for much of the race before fading in the final straight, finishing fifth.

Fun and dancing at Praça XV

Rio’s historic Praça XV has been home to a live site since the start of the Games, featuring shows and entertainment as well as a big screen to watch the Rio 2016 action. On Saturday, visitors were treated to a performance by Nara Figueiredo and her group of Romani dancers.

“Romani culture has a lot in common with the Olympic spirit of uniting people. Romani people also have our annual sports competitions. So today we're here to show our culture," said Figueiredo.
