On the eve of the 1,000 days until the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games milestone, swimmers Daniel Dias and Susana Schnarndorf were named best athletes at the 2013 Brazilian Paralympic Awards.
The winners were announced at an awards gala held on Wednesday night (11 December) at Rio's Museum of Modern Art. The awards, promoted by the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), are chosen by a public vote on the CPB website.
Dias and Schnarndorf produced great performances in the IPC Swimming World Championships in Montreal this year. Dias ended the event with six gold medals and Schnarndorf won the 100m breaststroke and took bronze in the 400m freestyle.
Verônica Hipólito’s debut performance at the IPC Athletics World Championships, in Lyon - gold in the 200m and silver in the 100m - earned her the title of Best Revelation.
The Brazilian Paralympic Awards acknowledged the best athletes, coaches and administrators for their achievements in the year 2013. For each of the 22 sports, an athlete was also honoured for his/her performance. Check out the list of winners below:
Best Female Athlete
Susana Schnarndorf Ribeiro: owner of five Brazilian triathlon titles, she participated in 13 Ironman editions and won various international events.
Best Male Athlete
Daniel Dias: standing out in competitions since 2006, when he participated in his first world championships, Dias owns 15 Paralympic medals (10 gold). He has been named Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability twice, in 2009 and 2013.
Revelation Award
Verônica Hipólito: made her debut at the IPC Athletics World Championships, in Lyon, aged 17, and won the 200m in the T38 class and took silver in the 100m.
