China celebrate winning the Asian title and a place in Rio (FIBA)
The Chinese men’s team and Senegalese women’s side are the latest to qualify for the basketball competition at Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has confirmed.
With the first phase of continental qualification now complete, nine men’s teams and seven women’s team are confirmed for the first Olympic Games to be staged in South America. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will feature 12 teams.
China’s men booked their place in Rio when they beat the Philippines 78-67 in the final of the 2015 FIBA Asia Championship on Saturday (3 October).
The host nation triumphed in the city of Changsha to win the continental title for 16th time. Veteran Yi Jianlian, elected as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, led the way with able support from young guns Zhou Qi and Guo Ailun.
The Olympic dream lives on for the Philippines, third-placed Iran and fourth-placed Japan, who all earned places in the 2016 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments.
China join Brazil, the USA, Australia, Nigeria, Venezuela, Argentina, Spain and Lithuania on the list of teams confirmed for next year’s tournament, which will be staged in Carioca Arena 1 in Barra Olympic Park.

Also on Saturday, Senegal outplayed Cameroon in the final of the women’s AfroBasket tournament to win a place in the Olympic Games. The Senegalese ended Cameroon’s unbeaten run in their capital city of Yaounde with a 81-66 triumph to claim their 11th continental title.
Veteran shooting guard Aya Traore starred in the final (16 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals) and received the Most Valuable Player of the tournament award.
Senegal become the seventh team to confirm their place in Rio, joining host nation Brazil, the USA, Serbia, Canada, Australia and Japan.
Cameroon and third-placed Nigeria will both contest the 2016 FIBA Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
