IOC President Jacques Rogge announces the election results for the Host City of the 2018 YOG (IOC)
This Wednesday, the 4th, the next city to host the Summer Youth Olympic Games was chosen. The Games are scheduled for 2018. The city of Buenos Aires was chosen after voting took place at the International Olympic Committee Extraordinary Session that also hosted presentations from the candidate cities to the Olympic Games that will happen after Rio 2016™.
Buenos Aires won the competition against another South American and a European city: Medellin (Colombia) and Glasgow (United Kingdom).
“I would like to congratulate Buenos Aires and their bid team for their dedication to and enthusiasm for the Youth Olympic Games project. I have no doubt they will build on the successes of Singapore 2010 and Nanjing 2014 to provide a platform on which the best young athletes from around the world can compete and learn about the Olympic values”, said the IOC President, Jacques Rogge.
Rio 2016™ President Carlos Nuzman said: "It is an important achievement for South America to be chosen by the International Olympic Committee to host both the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and now the 2018 Youth Olympic Games. I am sure Buenos Aires will host excellent Youth Olympics, and we look forward to sharing our knowledge and experience from the Rio 2016™ Games with our neighbours. We also congratulate Medellin and Glasgow for their excellent bids".

The announcement was the culmination of a bidding process launched in September 2011, which originally included six Candidate Cities - the three other cities were Guadalajara (Mexico), Poznań (Poland) and Rotterdam (Netherlands).
Just like the Olympic Games, the Youth Games take place every four years. Focusing on young high performance athletes, aged between 15 and 18 years old, the first edition of the Games was held in 2010 in Singapore. In 2012, the winter edition took place in Innsbruck.
The Youth Olympic Games next editions are scheduled for next year (2014) in Nanjing (China), between 16 and 28 August. The winter edition will take place in Lillehammer (Norway), in 2016.
