Brazil's budgetary proposal to increase the amount of investments allocated for rio

The State of Rio de Janeiro will get far higher funding in 2008 for infrastructure and urban planning projects. The budgetary proposal set forth by the Federal Government, which will be analyzed by the National Congress, stipulates R$ 1.116 billion worth of investments in the State next year, 88.1% higher than the amount stipulated in the 2007 proposal (R$ 620 million).

According to an article published in "O Globo" newspaper, the sectors that are more likely to receive these investments are transport (R$ 330 million), housing (R$ 298.3 million), health (R$ 159.9 million), sanitation (R$ 94.3 million) and education (R$ 34.5 million).

The following projects, among others, are included in the budgetary proposal: urban planning in poor communities, construction of the Highway Arc, maintenance of federal highways, dredging of ItaguaĆ­ Harbor, and construction of the head office of the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics.
