The Brazilian Olympic medallist, Joaquim Cruz, takes part with the United States Olympic Committee in a visit to the Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic venues. This Tuesday, the group visited the João Havelange Stadium, which will host the Track and Field competitions during the Rio 2016™ Games.

The former long-distance runner, winner of the 800m at the Los Angeles 1984 Games and silver medallist in Seoul 1988, said that he always dreamt of witnessing the Games in his home country. Joaquim Cruz lives in the United States and is the current coach of that country’s Paralympic Track and Field Team.

“Competing at the Olympics is the dream of many athletes and children who are passionate about sports. I am a lucky person because I experienced the Games as an athlete and I will now witness the Games in my home country. My role at the moment is to prepare the athletes to live this dream. I will be able to live it through my athletes’ achievement”, he said.

Joaquim Cruz is in Rio de Janeiro with Leslie Gamez, Managing Director of International Games at the United States Olympic Committee, and Doug Ingram, Managing Director of Sports Performance. In addition, other United States Track and Field representatives, John Chaplin, Sandy Snow and Aron McGuire, were in the city to visit the Rio 2016™ Olympic and Paralympic competition sites.
