After having assumed last week the management of the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center, this Wednesday, March 6, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (BOC) also took on the management of the Rio Velodrome, the most modern in Latin America. The facilities, previously under the Rio de Janeiro City Governments responsibility, were built for the Pan American Games Rio 2007, taken place last July. The Velodrome was transferred to BOC for 20 years and the facilities are part of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Park, major competition site in accordance with the citys bid project for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Like the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center, the Velodrome is included among the 56% of existing facilities in the Rio 2016 project. This is an additional legacy from the Pan American Games and it will be invaluable for the Rio 2016 bid. By assuming the Velodrome and the Maria Lenk Aquatic Center management, the Brazilian Olympic Committee confirms the Rio 2016 bid project and its commitment to the development of the Olympic Movement, said Carlos Arthur Nuzman, BOC and Rio 2016 Bid Committee president.
Courses, seminars, congresses and workshops in the sports area, training for athletes, coaches, referees and other professionals involved in the preparation and development of athletes; indoor cycling school for children; local, regional, national and international competitions, fitness center; sports-linked social activities; sports and non-sports events will be promoted by BOC in the Velodrome.
According to the BOC project, the Velodrome will be made available for international athletes to train, within interchange programs maintained by the entity. Olympic Committees and athletes in the Americas have already expressed interest in competing and taking part in sports interchange programs in the Velodrome, one of the great legacies from the Pan American Games Rio 2007.
