Brazilian Minister of Sport delivers a letter from the president of the republic to president Rogge ratifying support to Rio 201
On Monday, January 29, President  Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ratified Brazilian Government support Rio’s bid to host  the Olympic Games 2016. This support was stated in a letter sent by president Lula to Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee. The letter was delivered to  IOC president during a meeting with the Minister of Sport of Brazil, Orlando Silva Júnior. The National Secretary of High Performance Sport,  Djan Madruga, and the President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman were also at the meeting.
 
In his letter Lula recalled the visit to IOC headquarters and to the Olympic Museum in January, 2003, and thanked IOC president for his presence at the Pan American Games, in July, 2007.   According to Minister Orlando Silva, president Lula could go to the Olympic Games Beijing 2008. During his meeting with Jacques Rogge, Minister Orlando Silva talked about the programs designed by the Ministry of Sport to further the development of sport in Brazil, like the Athlete Scholarship and the Tax Incentive Law for sport. The minister ratified the signature of the World Anti-Doping Code by Brazil and talked about the Growth Acceleration Program, a set of actions targeting development in various segments of Brazilian society. The Minister also mentioned the success of the Brazilian economy in face of the recent crisis that has impacted stock exchanges all around the world.  On his turn, Jacques Rogge, underlined the significance of  2014 Soccer World Cup to Brazil.
 
During the meeting, BOC president, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, highlighted the visit of the Minister of Sport to IOC and the letter sent by president Lula to president Rogge. “This is yet another evidence of the full support and commitment of the Brazilian government to Rio’s bid to host the Olympic Games 2016. This personal letter from president Lula reflects how committed the president is to Rio 2016 project”, Nuzman explained.
