The Brazilian government is granting the country's armed forces an extra 78 million reais (US$26m) to ensure security at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

In total, 88,000 soldiers, police officers and members of other public security services are being deployed to the Rio 2016 public safety effort.

Troops undertook their first exercises in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday. They will begin patrolling Olympic venues on 24 July. On 4 August, a city-wide security campaign will start operating. As well as the sports venues, there will be a visible military presence on roads, at railway stations and airports, and in major tourist areas.

Sports minister Leonardo Picciani said on Tuesday (12 July) that the Ministry of Defence had requested the extra funds from the government budget. "It is the amount needed for the defence forces to carry out their duties and it will be available," he said.

Picciani is one of nine ministers who are members of a special cabinet committee which is coordinating Olympic operations.

The Rio 2016 Olympic Games begin on 5 August and run until 21 August.
