The 500 days to go until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games milestone has created a major buzz on social media as athletes from across the planet express their excitement about the first edition of the Games in South America. The 500 days to go until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games milestone has created a major buzz on social media as athletes from across the planet express their excitement about the first edition of the Games in South America. CHAD LE CLOS, SWIMMING, SOUTH AFRICA

The 24-year-old, who stunned the world by beating Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly final at the London 2012 Games, is expected to be one of the stars of Rio 2016.

 

TOM DALEY, DIVING, GREAT BRITAIN

He was Britain's youngest Olympian for 48 years when he competed at Beijing 2008 aged 14, and four years later in London he won bronze in the 10m platform. Now Daley is eagerly looking forward to Rio, where he intends to embrace the local culture.

BRUNO REZENDE, VOLLEYBALL, BRAZIL

The two-time Olympic silver medallist (Beijing 2008 and London 2012) is hoping to go one better on home soil. “If we can dream, we can also turn our dreams into reality,” he wrote on Instagram, with a photo from London.

 

HENK GROL, JUDO, NETHERLANDS

A bronze medallist in the -100kg category in the last two editions of the Olympic Games, the Dutchman had a firm message for his rivals ahead of Rio 2016.

 

SHARNI WILLIAMS, EMILEE CHERRY AND SHANNON PARRY, RUGBY, AUSTRALIA

The Australian team, who won the 2009 Women's Rugby Sevens World Cup and the 2013 Oceania Championship, did not let the wet weather dampen their excitement for Rio 2016.

 

BRAZILIAN SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING TEAM

With the exception of Atlanta 1996, Brazil has entered every Olympic synchronised swimming competition since the sport’s debut at the Los Angeles 1984 Games, and they hope to win a first medal in Rio. “Let’s go! We’re training hard for an unprecendented result for Brazil,” they tweeted.

 

CLEMENTE RUSSO, BOXING, ITALY

The heavyweight pugilist, who won silver medals at the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympic Games, tweeted:  “There are only #500days until the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Dreaming of gold.”

 

JADE JONES, TAEKWONDO, GREAT BRITAIN

The -57kg champion at the London 2012 Olympic Games is determined to keep her feet on the ground as excitement builds towards Rio 2016.

FABIANA DINIZ, HANDBALL, BRAZIL

Part of the Brazilian women’s team that won the 2013 world championship and three Pan-American Games titles, Diniz tweeted: “500 days until the biggest sporting event on the planet: the Olympic Games!”
