The year 2011 was a year of planning, but it was also a year of many accomplishments to the Rio 2016™ Organising Committee and the city of Rio de Janeiro. The launch of the two Games’ emblems, the announcement of new sponsors and the winning project of the Urban General Plan for the Olympic Park were some of the major accomplishments of this special year. Eventually, all commitments and deadlines set out by Rio 2016™ and agreed with by International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) were closely met.

“It has been a year of accomplishments and planning. The IOC and the IPC are pleased with what they have seen. We are meeting the deadlines, and we were able to advance some deliverables. In addition, they could feel the emotion that is to come. The Cariocas have experienced two wonderful celebrations: the launch of the Olympic emblem, at the 2011 New Year’s Eve, and the launch of the Paralympic emblem, at the lighting of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas Christmas tree. Rio, Brazil and the world started to feel the taste of what Rio 2016™ is going to be like”, said the Organising Committee President, Carlos Arthur Nuzman. A total of seven meetings of project review were attended by the IOC and IPC in Rio de Janeiro in 2011.

For 2012, the goal is to reach the number of 400 employees and 40 acting areas in a new phase of maturity. In the next year, Rio 2016™ will have a new headquarter, located in Rio city centre, beside the City Hall.

The year 2011 was an intense year. 2012 will also be a year of hard work. “This year we have completed our Foundation Plan, with about 1,300 pages. In a more-than-a-year task force, we have built the functional areas bases. The Foundation Plan has already been sent to the IOC for final approval. Now, we will begin the Concept Plan, a second phase of this process. For 2012, we are planning to deliver the Games Security General Plan and the Responsibility Assignment Matrix, for which Rio 2016™ and the three levels of government have assigned their own tasks. 2011 was the first full year of the Organising Committee, created in the middle of 2010, and the evaluation is positive”, concludes Leonardo Gryner, the Organising Committee CEO.

To observe and transfer knowledge, the Rio 2016™ team has attended meetings in London, which is carrying out test events for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. For the next year, many activities are scheduled to take place in the English capital.
