JAPAN SHOCK THE ALL BLACKS
There's been a massive shock in the men's rugby sevens event in Deodoro Stadium. The unfancied Japanese side has inflicted an astonishing defeat on the mighty All Blacks of New Zealand, one of the favourites for gold.
It's not the first time Japanese rugby has surprised the world. At the 2015 World Cup, the 15-a-side team beat powerhouse South Africa 34-32.
KING AND QUEEN OF CLAY TO HOLD COURT IN RIO
Reigning French Open women's champion Garbine Muguruza and nine-time champion Rafael Nadal will be representing Spain in the mixed doubles event here in Rio, the International Tennis Federation has confirmed.
The glamour pairing is seeded no.3 and looks sure to pack the crowds into the Olympic Tennis Centre. Will the Spanish reign over Rio?
MADISON MAKES THE QUARTERS
Madison Keys of the USA is looking in good form in the women's tennis singles. She's just beaten Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro in a tough three-set match, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. She'll face either Italy's Sara Errani or Russia's Daria Kasatkina for a place in the Olympic semi-finals.
Fifty-two years after its release, 'The Girl from Ipanema' is at the top of the charts again.
Since the song accompanied Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen's catwalk at the opening ceremony, it's been streamed more than 40,000 times, according to The New York Times. Spotify confirmed these stats, adding that this meant a 1,200 per cent increase in plays for the song.
The bossa nova song won a Grammy in 1965 for Record of the Year and is widely believed to be the second most recorded pop song following The Beatles 'Yesterday.'
ALLEZ LES BLEUS! DOMINANT FRENCH SWEEP ASIDE QATARIS IN HANDBALL SHOWDOWN
The French men's handball side, champions at London 2012 and Beijing 2008, have swept aside the challenge of Qatar by 35-20. That's much closer than the 25-22 defeat they inflicted on the Qataris at the world championship final in Doha last year.
France's Nikola Karabatic said: "it was an important game for us for the competition and a remake of the world championship final, and we knew that Qatar had won their first game with 7-8 goals against Croatia, which put them on the map for these Olympics, so we were really focused today, played really well and I'm really happy."
MATTHEW MCCONAUGHEY AN OLYMPIC RUGBY FAN
Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey, who is married to a Brazilian, has been soaking up the Olympic spirit in various venues across Rio in the last couple of days.
Last spotted at the late-night swimming events on Monday, the Interstellar star is now up at Deodoro Stadium to cheer on the USA men's rugby sevens team. He's just seen South Africa dispatch Spain 24-0.

JAPAN CHECKING OUT THE COMPETITION
Japan's rugby players are catching the first game of the Olympic tournament today in Deodoro Stadium.
27-year-old Lomano Lava Lemeki (front, centre) sits with his teammates, watching France upset Australia 31-14 in the opening match.
"Good weather, good samba, good food," a contented Lemeki said.

HOT PURSUIT FOR GB TRACK STARS
With the men's team pursuit event starting on Thursday, the star-packed GB team have been getting their final practise session in at the Olympic Velodrome this morning.
Seven-time Olympic medallist Sir Chris Hoy was there to see them in action, and he thinks they're looking fast.
TENNIS QUEEN IVANOVIC HUNGRY FOR AÇAÍ
After an early morning training session at the Olympic Tennis Centre, beautiful Ana Ivanovic of Serbia has obviously got her hunger on and wants to try açaí, the famous fruit from the Amazon. Any volunteers around to make a special delivery?
Ivanovic has been knocked out of the singles event but that hasn't dampened her spirits: she might be partnering with team-mate Nenad Zimonjic in the mixed doubles later this week.
TUNE IN NOW: CANADIANS SHOW 'ICE IN THEIR VEINS' DOESN'T MELT AT COPACABANA
The men's beach volleyball duo Chaim Schalk and Ben Saxton are on the cusp of beating Brazilian's Evandro Goncalves and Oliveira Junior but it's a battle in the group stage match.
The Canadians lead 14-13 in the third and deciding set at Copacabana Beach, widely celebrated as the birthplace of the sport. The northern nation's tag line is 'Ice In Their Veins' even though Rio 2016 is a Summer Olympic Games and all.

FANS HAVE HOPE FOR USA RUGBY TEAM
Travelling all the way from California are Shelby, Cameron, Eric, who grew his moustache especially for the Games, and May Harris.
"We definitely stand a chance," Eric said. "We've got some quick guys and rugby is the fastest growing sport in the USa. Give us one more World Cup, and the one after that we're going to be in contention."
The USA are set to go against Argentina at 1pm today.

RUGBY FAN TAKES AIM
Taking the kick in Deodoro Stadium this morning is Felipe Brito, 24, from Brazil. The men's rugby sevens competition begins later today when Australia takes on France.
This is Brito's second day of Rio 2016 as yesterday he watched Australia triumph in the women's rugby sevens competition.
"I'm excited to see Brazil but everybody's saying New Zealand are the best, so I guess I'm excited to see them too," Brito said. "Rugby doesn't get much attention in Brazil but it's growing slowly. Hopefully I'll be able to find a club near me this year."

PHELPSFACE BECOMES TOP-TRENDING HASHTAG
If looks could kill, South African swimmer Chad Le Clos would be in trouble.
Before he competed in the men's 200 metre butterfly semi-finals, he was seen joking around with 19-time gold medallist Michael Phelps, who did not seem to be having any of it. Phelps's glare at the South African's antics created a meme and a top-trending hashtag: #PhelpsFace.
Viewers around the world quickly applied Phelps' glare to a number of relatable problems and even compared him to his son, Boomer.
BABY BOOMER READY TO CHEER ON DAD TO GOLD MEDAL 21
With all due respect to father Michael, the biggest star of the Olympic Aquatics Centre so far at Rio 2016 may be little Boomer Phelps.
Boomer was in the stands to see dad win gold medal no.19 on Sunday. Today, he should be there again tonight in the arms of mother Nichole Johnson, as Phelps senior tries to take his haul to 21 gold medals with a 200 metres butterfly and 4x200 metres freestyle double in the space of just 70 minutes.

LOVE WINS AT RUGBY SEVENS
Love was in the air last night at Deodoro Stadium. After the women's rugby sevens medal ceremony, Marjorie Enya, a 28-year-old worker at the stadium, went up to girlfriend Isadora Cerullo, a member of the Brazilian squad, and asked her hand in marriage.
We're happy to report that 25-year-old Isadora accepted on the spot. Good luck to the couple, who have been together two years and can now look forward to a lifetime together.
"The Olympic Games can look like closure but, for me, it's starting a new life with someone," Enya told the BBC. "I wanted to show people that love wins. She is the love of my life."
