A new world
Saturday

The Olympic rings are being painted onto the pitch in Deodoro Stadium, as the French and Spanish women's rugby teams prepare for the return of the sport to the Games.

It's a massive match in the water polo competition between the USA and reigning Olympic champions Croatia. It's currently finely poised, 2-2 in the first period.

It's been a great start for Brazil in the table tennis. Caroline Kumahara has beaten her Australian opponent Melissa Tapper. This isn't the end of the road for Tapper, who will also be competing in the Paralympic Games in September.

After a 92 year hiatus, rugby has returned to the Olympic Games. Team GB's women have arrived at Deodoro ahead of their first game against hosts Brazil.

LEADER OF THE PACK
Chris Froome of Great Britain leads the peleton during the men's road race under the strong Copacabana sun this morning.

"It's a one-day event. We don't have 21 chances, like we do at the Tour de France. The legs are feeling good, we've got a great team here, and we hope to be in the thick of thing," he said.

LOOKING FOR SWEET REVENGE
Brazil's women's handball team are looking for revenge against Norway, who knocked them out in the quarter-finals before going on to win golf at London 2012. As things are the score stands at Brazil 18 Norway 16.

Chris Froome is one of the favourites for today's men's road race, fresh from Tour de France triumph. He's looking confident.

The first medals won at Rio 2016 will be in shooting, and it's coming soon. The first gold will be in the final of the women’s 10m air rifle (scheduled for 10:30). In contention are Serbian Andrea Arsovic and China's Yi Siling.

In what marks the 60th anniversary of water polo's "blood in the water" match, Hungary led defending world champion Serbia 10-7 early in the second half. Serbia pulled to within one at 10-9 and eventually evened the score. The group A opening match between the rivals ended in a 13-13 tie.
